London's vintage and retro treasures are among my top things about the city. It's the sort of browsing experience that leaves you talking to the shop's owner for a half-hour about the history of a lamp or the history of a satchel made of leather.

I always look for authenticity when buying retro-themed gifts. Maker's marks, original labels, and even a bit of wear and tear add a certain character. The antique dealers of London are generally willing to share the story behind the item. This story is usually included in the gift. Imagine gifting a scarf dating back to the 1950s that traveled across Europe or a typewriter that was used to write love letters in years in the past. This turns a gift into a living piece of history.

Of course, part of the fun is mixing old with the modern. I often put together a vintage piece of furniture with modern packaging or an attractive bouquet of flowers to give it a modern twist. It's a wonderful way to make something old feel exciting while honoring its roots.

London has a range of seasonal fairs. They are particularly popular during Christmas. The Southbank Winter Market, as well as various pop-up vintage markets, combine the magic of Christmas with stalls that sell unique and one-off gifts. I'm never left empty-handed and more often than not I go home with something for myself, too.

In a world filled with disposable goods, giving an old-fashioned or retro present feels thoughtful and personal. It's a nod to craftsmanship and to stories that should be kept and to the pleasure of discovering beauty in objects that have stood the test of time. For me, London is the perfect backdrop for that hunt -an urban area that is proud of its history while still feeling alive and vibrant.
